Mavik controls high blood pressure. It is effective when used alone or combined with other high blood pressure medications such as diuretics that help rid the body of excess water. Mavik is also used to treat heart failure or dysfunction following a heart attack.

Mavik is in a family of drugs known as ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors. It works by preventing a chemical in your blood called angiotensin I from converting into a more potent form that increases salt and water retention in your body. ACE inhibitors also expand your blood vessels further reducing blood pressure.

ADULTS

High Blood Pressure

The usual starting dose if you are not taking a diuretic is 1 milligram once a day.Depending on your blood pressure response your doctor may increase your dosage up to 2 to 4 milligrams once a day. If your blood pressure still does not respond your dosage may be increased to 4 milligrams twice a day and the doctor may add a diuretic to your regimen.

If you are already taking a diuretic your doctor will have you stop taking it 2 to 3 days before you start treatment with Mavik. If your diuretic should not be stopped your starting dose of Mavik should be 0.5 milligrams. A starting dose of 0.5 milligrams daily is also recommended for people with liver or kidney disease.

Treatment After Heart Attack

The usual starting dose is 1 milligram once a day. The doctor will gradually increase the dose up to a maximum of 4 milligrams once a day.If you have poor kidney function or cirrhosis of the liver your starting dose for either high blood pressure or heart attack will probably be lowered to 0.5 milligrams once daily.
