Celebrex is primarily used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It is in a new class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) known as "COX-2 inhibitors." Celebrex has also shown to reduce inflammation and pain, just as older NSAIDs such as Motrin and Naprosyn do, by inhibiting the effect of a natural enzyme named COX-2. Celebrex is also known to lower the number of colorectal polyps (growths in the wall of the rectum and lower intestine) in people that suffer from a condition known as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) that is an inherited tendency to develop large numbers of colorectal polyps that eventually become cancerous.
